How to Buy the Best Digital Photo Frame

Confused about which digital photo frame to buy? Our following guide will help you…

Screen – Size, Type & Resolution

There are many screen sizes available in these frames. A 7 inch digital photo frame is typically the smallest to begin with and the other sizes available are usually 8, 10 and 15 inch.

The size you decide on depends where you want it to be displayed. For example, a 10 inch digital photo frame is usually a good size for a small family home and big enough to show group photos well.

To ensure your displayed photos are of the highest quality, make sure you choose a digital picture frame that has a high resolution. This means the more pixels there are, the better the quality will be as you will be able to see the finer details in photos.

Low resolution can make your pictures appear grainy and pixelated which is very unflattering. You will find that the best digital photo frames that have a higher resolution are higher in price. However, if you don’t want to spend too much, aim for at least a 640 x 480 pixel resolution frame.

Memory – Internal & External Ports

Most digital picture frames will usually have internal storage included. Some will be 256MB or some can be 2GB. However, nearly all frames will have ports built in for external memory sticks such as a USB, SD, MD etc. Make sure you check there are these ports especially if the internal storage is quite low.

The number of photos that you can fit on the internal or external storage will depend on the image resolution of your photos. The higher the image resolution is, the less photos you will be able to fit on due to the file size of the photo.

This is something you will need to consider when choosing your digital frame so it is best you check the file size of your photos beforehand.

Connections

An easier way for you to display your digital photos on your frame is via Wi-Fi if your digital picture frame comes with this option.

Your photos can be streamed from your computer, sent to the frame (which some will have their own email address) or accessed via the cloud storage. This is ideal if you’re always misplacing your memory cards and if your photo files are quite large.

Other ways that you can connect your frame to enable you to show your pictures off is via a HDMI cable or Bluetooth. With Bluetooth, you can send photos from any other Bluetooth enabled device to your frame. It comes in handy when your friends want to send their photos to your frame.

The HDMI option will be ideal if you would like to show your pictures to a large group of people as you will be able to connect to the TV for everyone to see on a big screen. That way, there will be no need for everyone to crowd around the frame.

Functions and Other Considerations

Digital photo frames are typically mains connected as they require a small but consistent amount of power to run slideshows on a continuous loop. It may be a good idea to look for frames that have rechargeable batteries but there are very few that have this.

  • A way to overcome the device being always on is to look for digital frames that have an in built motion sensor. This allows the frame to start the slideshow only when someone enters the room or leaves the room. Some will have the option to time the frame to switch off if it has detected no movement.
  • A remote control would be useful as well which will allow you to pause or go back a photo. This will come in handy when you are showing your photos off to guests.
  • Most frames have the option to be wall mounted, be sure to check the back for holes or hooks to do this. It’s best to choose a digital picture frame that has rechargeable batteries in this case as having an unsightly wire hanging from the frame down your wall will not be very attractive.
  • If you do intend to hang your digital frame, it’s best to check the weight of the frame as well. A few 15 inch digital photo frames tend to be heavier due to the extra size.
  • You may want to consider a frame with more memory storage as well to avoid having a USB or memory stick sticking out the side of your frame which won’t look very stylish.
  • There is the option to change your digital frame as some of them will come with interchangeable covers. It’s ideal if you often change your home décor around or just like a change once in a while. You could go from a modern looking frame to a traditional wooden looking frame.

So instead of overfilling your walls or display cabinets with too many photo frames, opt for just one or two digital photo frames to display your beautiful photos. What’s more is that you won’t have such a tough time deciding which photos to display.

Traditional or Digital Photo Frame?

It’s no surprise that we have digital photo frames available to us given that we do live in a digital era now. More and more people are using these to show off their pictures instead of using the old fashioned photo frames especially as there are so many cheap digital photo frames that provide such versatility and convenience.

Digital frames allow us to show off our photos with a slideshow without having to stay connected to a computer. All you need to do is upload the photo onto the frame by a memory stick, Wi-Fi or computer.

The Difference Between Traditional and Digital

There are many benefits to using a digital picture frame as opposed to traditional photo frames. These include:

  • Space Saving: A digital can display large number of photos whereas a traditional can hold just 1. This will save you from having to display your photos in several frames which can take up a lot of space.
  • Cost Efficient: There is no need to print off your photos for a digital frame.
  • Better Quality: Printing off photos may not give you the best quality and having these on digital will ensure the quality still looks good. Printed photos for traditional frames will also fade over time.
  • Automatic Resize: Some digital frames will automatically resize your photos to fit the frame whereas with traditional frames, you will have to resize and crop your photo to ensure it prints out correctly to fit your frame.
  • Video Play: Digital frames have the option to play videos with sound.
  • Music Background: Some digitals have the option to play background music to your slideshows.

The above benefits prove that digital frames do more than just displaying photos. Additional features are offered in some frames which gives you more value for your money.

There are still some people who use traditional frames as they are unfamiliar with modern technology or just prefer a more traditional and classic looking home.
